Overview

Cryostat Microtome

When a surgeon is waiting, minutes matter. The UNI120 cryostat microtome delivers rapid frozen sections with a stable -35 to -40°C chamber and rapid-cooling Peltier stations that reach -65°C, so back-to-back theatre cases stay clean and reproducible. A precise motor drives chatter-free sectioning from 1–100 µm, while UV self-disinfection and a heated anti-frost glass door keep the instrument hygienic and clear — so the pathologist can guide the operating team with confidence, while the patient is still on the table.

What this instrument does — and why it matters in your lab

Intra-operative frozen section is time-critical — the surgeon is waiting. A cryostat has to hold chamber temperature stably, section cleanly at the set thickness, and be safe and quick to clean between cases. Poor temperature control or a struggling anti-roll plate turns a ten-minute answer into a re-freeze and a re-cut.

A cryostat is a microtome inside a refrigerated chamber for cutting frozen tissue during surgery. Tissue is frozen on a chuck, sectioned at a few microns, picked up on a slide and rapidly stained for the pathologist to read while the patient is still in theatre. Stable chamber (and specimen) temperature and a well-set anti-roll plate are what make consistent, readable sections.

Indian buyer context

Suitable for hospitals, medical colleges & diagnostic labs

Used by hospitals with surgical/oncology services and medical colleges doing frozen sections. Because it is used intra-operatively, service response time and uptime matter more than for most instruments. Biomedical teams check the electrical load, earthing and placement; the pathology department checks temperature stability and section quality before approval.

From the field

Practical points before you buy and install

🧭

Common questions before buying

  • Stable chamber temperature and, where fitted, specimen-head cooling for consistent sections.
  • Section-thickness range and blade-holder type (disposable-blade compatibility helps turnaround and safety).
  • Anti-roll plate quality and ease of setting.
  • Defrost and disinfection routine, and how quickly the chamber recovers temperature.
  • Local service response and spares — critical for an intra-operative instrument.
🛠️

Practical points before installation

  • Confirm the electrical point, earthing and ambient conditions for the refrigeration unit.
  • Plan placement near the frozen-section reporting area for fast turnaround.
  • Agree the cleaning/disinfection routine and safety protocol with the team.
⚠️

What usually goes wrong in labs

  • Rolled or torn sections — anti-roll plate not set correctly or temperature not right for the tissue.
  • Slow turnaround — chamber not pre-cooled or recovering slowly after defrost.
  • Safety incidents — blade handling and disinfection not followed.
  • Downtime during a case — no local service cover.
🧽

Maintenance points

  • Follow the defrost and chamber-cleaning schedule.
  • Disinfect between cases per protocol.
  • Check temperature stability and record it.
  • Maintain blade-handling safety and keep a maintenance log.
📄

Documents supplied with installation

  • PDI checklist
  • Installation checklist and site-readiness note
  • Operating manual and safety/disinfection routine
  • Final QC checklist
  • Warranty certificate and AMC/CMC terms
  • Service report format
🎓

Operator training points

  • Freezing and chuck handling
  • Setting the anti-roll plate and thickness
  • Safe blade handling
  • Defrost, cleaning and disinfection between cases

AMC / CMC considerations

AMC/CMC is strongly recommended for a cryostat given its intra-operative use — scheduled preventive maintenance of the refrigeration and microtome mechanism, temperature validation and priority service response to minimise downtime during surgical lists.

For the people who run it

Technician & biomedical notes

🔬

Technician notes

  • Pre-cool the chamber before a list so the first case is not delayed.
  • Set the anti-roll plate carefully — most rolled/torn sections are an anti-roll or temperature issue.
  • Follow blade-handling and disinfection protocol strictly.
  • Record chamber temperature; report drift immediately.
🧰

Biomedical / maintenance notes

  • Provide the rated, earthed electrical point and suitable ambient conditions.
  • Validate chamber temperature stability at installation and record it.
  • Prioritise this instrument in the AMC/CMC plan for uptime during surgery.
  • Keep spares (blades, seals) and each service report on file.

FAQs

Common questions

What chamber temperature does it hold?

The UNI120 holds a chamber temperature of −35°C to −40°C, with a freezing plate down to −40°C and two rapid-cooling Peltier stations reaching −60°C — stable temperature is what gives consistent frozen sections.

What section thickness can it cut?

1–100 µm — in 1 µm steps from 1–20 µm, 2 µm steps from 20–50 µm and 5 µm steps from 50–100 µm — set for the tissue and the pathologist’s preference.

Does it take disposable blades?

Yes — the UNI120 has a high-quality blade holder that adapts to both high- and low-profile disposable blades, with an anti-seize coating for clean, tremble-free sectioning.

How is it cleaned and disinfected between cases?

Per a defined defrost/cleaning and disinfection routine supplied with installation, with attention to blade-handling safety.

What power supply is required?

The UNI120 runs on 220–240 V AC / 50 Hz (or 110–127 V AC / 60 Hz), 1200 VA. Provide a dedicated, earthed point and suitable ambient conditions for the refrigeration unit.

Why is service response so important for a cryostat?

Because it is used during surgery — downtime delays a live case. We recommend AMC/CMC with priority response and keep spares planned.

Is training provided?

Yes — installation includes training on freezing, anti-roll and thickness setting, safe blade handling and disinfection.

Is AMC/CMC available?

Yes — and strongly recommended for an intra-operative instrument, covering refrigeration and mechanism maintenance, temperature validation and priority response.

Can this be supplied for a government tender?

Yes. We provide Product brochure, technical specification sheet, compliance/deviation statement, budgetary quotation, warranty terms, installation & site-readiness requirements and AMC/CMC details.

Is the cryostat microtome suitable for intra-operative frozen sections?

Yes — it is designed for rapid intra-operative frozen-section diagnosis, with a stable chamber temperature and smooth, accurate sectioning so the pathologist gets a clean section in minutes while the surgeon waits.

What is the price of the Cryostat Microtome in India?

The price depends on capacity/configuration, accessories, installation location, warranty, AMC/CMC requirement, tender documentation and GST/freight. Share your requirement — such as cassette load or daily throughput — and we’ll send a configuration-specific quotation, usually within one working day.

Is the Cryostat Microtome made in India?

Yes — Unimeditrek Pvt. Ltd. manufactures it in India, with nationwide installation, training and service support.

Do you provide installation, training and AMC/CMC?

Yes — professional installation and commissioning, operator training, preventive maintenance and AMC/CMC contracts are available across India.

Can you provide technical specifications and compliance documents?

Yes — technical specifications, compliance sheets, warranty/AMC formats and Make-in-India declarations are available on request from our team.

Is the Cryostat Microtome available for export?

Yes — we supply international distributors. Contact us for export documentation and distributor terms.
