What this instrument does — and why it matters in your lab

The microtome is where all the upstream work is finally cut into a section — and where chatter, folds, thick/thin bands and tears show up if the instrument is not rigid or well-maintained. A histology lab needs consistent micron-thin sections, a safe blade routine and predictable feed, day after day.

A microtome cuts micron-thin sections from a paraffin block for staining and reading. The block is trimmed (coarse feed), then sectioned at the set thickness with a smooth handwheel or motorised advance; sections are floated out on a water bath and picked up on slides. Rigidity, a good blade holder and a controlled advance are what keep sections free of chatter, folds and tears.

Indian buyer context

Suitable for hospitals, medical colleges & diagnostic labs

Used by every histopathology lab — hospitals, medical colleges and diagnostic centres. Teaching labs value a safe handwheel lock and disposable-blade compatibility for trainees. Purchase teams ask for type, thickness range, blade-holder and safety features; the pathology department checks section quality; biomedical checks build quality and (for motorised units) the electrical requirement.

From the field

Practical points before you buy and install

🧭

Common questions before buying

  • Rigidity and build — the main defence against chatter and vibration.
  • Section-thickness range and increments, and trimming/coarse feed.
  • Blade-holder type and disposable-blade compatibility.
  • Specimen orientation and a safe handwheel lock (important with trainees).
  • Service, spares and blade supply.
🛠️

Practical points before installation

  • Place on a stable, vibration-free bench.
  • For motorised units, confirm the electrical point.
  • Keep blades and a water bath ready for the first sections.
⚠️

What usually goes wrong in labs

  • Chatter and vibration lines — insufficient rigidity, a loose block/blade or a worn mechanism.
  • Folds and tears — blade angle/clearance or block temperature issues.
  • Thick/thin sections — advance mechanism or block-holder problems.
  • Blade injuries — handwheel not locked during block/blade changes.
🧽

Maintenance points

  • Keep the mechanism clean and lubricated per schedule.
  • Change blades correctly and dispose of them safely.
  • Check clearance angle and block-holder tightness.
  • Always engage the handwheel lock during changes; keep a maintenance log.
📄

Documents supplied with installation

  • PDI checklist
  • Installation checklist and site-readiness note
  • Operating manual with safe blade-change procedure
  • Final QC checklist
  • Warranty certificate and AMC/CMC terms
  • Service report format
🎓

Operator training points

  • Trimming and sectioning technique
  • Correct blade change and disposal
  • Setting clearance angle and thickness
  • Using the handwheel safety lock — every time

AMC / CMC considerations

AMC/CMC covers preventive maintenance of the advance mechanism and blade holder, cleaning/lubrication and priority response.

For the people who run it

Technician & biomedical notes

🔬

Technician notes

  • Engage the handwheel lock before any block or blade change — this is the one rule that prevents injuries.
  • If sections chatter, check block clamping, blade tightness and clearance before anything else.
  • Match blade profile to the tissue; a dull or wrong blade causes folds and tears.
  • Keep the mechanism clean — wax build-up affects the advance.
🧰

Biomedical / maintenance notes

  • Provide a stable, vibration-free bench (and power for motorised units).
  • Verify the safety lock and advance mechanism at installation.
  • Hold PDI/installation/QC checklists and AMC service reports.
  • Plan blade and spare supply.
