Small biopsies lost or damaged in processing
Also known as: lost biopsies, damaged samples
Small tissue fragments may appear missing or fragmented on the slide. Blocks may show uneven or incomplete sections.
Where it usually appears: Typically seen during routine processing of small biopsies, especially in automated processors.
- Inadequate fixation time
- Overheating during processing
- Improper embedding technique
- Inadequate sectioning
- Use of dull blades
- Inspect the processing machine for jams
- Check fixation times for compliance
- Examine embedding molds for proper use
- Reprocess the samples if possible
- Use fresh embedding media
- Sharpen or replace microtome blades
- Ensure proper fixation protocols are followed
- Regular maintenance of processing equipment
