Microtome handwheel resistance or slipping
Also known as: microtome resistance, handwheel slipping
Blocks may appear unevenly cut or show irregular thickness. Sections may be difficult to obtain consistently.
Where it usually appears: Typically observed during routine sectioning of paraffin-embedded tissue blocks.
- Dirt or debris accumulation in the handwheel mechanism
- Worn or damaged gears
- Improper lubrication of moving parts
- Incorrect adjustment of the handwheel tension
- Inspect the handwheel for visible debris or obstruction
- Check for loose screws or components
- Test handwheel movement without a block to assess resistance
- Clean the handwheel mechanism thoroughly
- Lubricate the gears and moving parts as per manufacturer guidelines
- Replace worn or damaged components
- Perform regular maintenance and cleaning of the microtome
- Lubricate moving parts at scheduled intervals
- Ensure proper handling and storage of microtome to avoid damage
