Specimen Transport & Cold Chain SOP

Purpose

To ensure the proper transport and maintenance of specimens under cold chain conditions to preserve integrity and viability.

Scope

This SOP applies to all personnel involved in the handling and transport of specimens within the laboratory.

Responsibilities

• Laboratory staff: Ensure specimens are packaged and transported according to this SOP.
• Quality manager: Review and update the SOP as necessary.
• Transport personnel: Follow specified procedures during specimen transport.

Materials & equipment

• Cooler or ice packs
• Thermal containers
• Labels for specimens
• Transport logs
• Personal protective equipment (PPE)

Procedure

1. Prepare the specimen by ensuring it is properly labeled and sealed.
2. Select appropriate thermal container based on specimen type and transport duration.
3. Place ice packs in the thermal container to maintain required temperature.
4. Carefully pack the specimen within the thermal container, ensuring it is secure.
5. Seal the container and label it with transport information and handling instructions.
6. Transport the specimen directly to the designated laboratory area without unnecessary delays.

Records

• Transport log documenting time, date, and personnel involved in the transport.
• Specimen tracking form to ensure traceability.

Safety

• Always wear appropriate PPE when handling specimens.
• Ensure containers are secure to prevent spills during transport.
