Purpose
To ensure the safety of laboratory personnel by outlining the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety protocols.
Scope
This SOP applies to all laboratory personnel working in the histopathology laboratory.
Responsibilities
- Laboratory Manager: Ensure compliance with PPE requirements.
- Laboratory Personnel: Adhere to PPE guidelines and report any issues.
Materials & equipment
- Lab coat
- Safety goggles
- Face shield
- Gloves
- N95 respirator
- Biohazard waste bags
Procedure
- Assess the risk of exposure before starting work.
- Select appropriate PPE based on the risk assessment.
- Put on lab coat and secure it properly.
- Wear safety goggles to protect eyes from splashes.
- Use a face shield when handling hazardous materials.
- Put on gloves that are appropriate for the materials being handled.
- Ensure gloves are free of tears or punctures before use.
- Remove PPE in the correct order to avoid contamination.
- Dispose of used PPE in designated biohazard waste bags.
- Wash hands thoroughly after removing PPE.
- Report any PPE-related incidents to the Laboratory Manager.
- Review and update PPE requirements annually.

Safety
- Always wear appropriate PPE when in the laboratory.
- Ensure PPE is maintained in good condition.
- Know the location of safety equipment such as eyewash stations and safety showers.
