Grossing / Cut-up SOP
Purpose
To describe and sample specimens systematically for diagnosis.
Scope
All specimens presented for grossing.
Responsibilities
- Pathologist / trained grossing technician
Materials & equipment
- Grossing station with downdraft/ventilation
- Cassettes, forceps, blades
- Measuring scale, camera
Procedure
- Confirm specimen identity against the accession label.
- Describe the specimen (type, size, colour, lesions) and dictate/record findings.
- Remove sutures/staples; decalcify bony fragments as needed.
- Take representative sections into labelled cassettes at ~3–4 mm thickness.
- Reconcile cassette count with the record; place cassettes into the processor basket.

- Work at a ventilated grossing station; sharps precautions.
