Gross Photography SOP
Purpose
To ensure standardized procedures for capturing high-quality gross photographs of specimens.
Scope
This SOP applies to all personnel involved in the grossing process.
Responsibilities
- Grossing technician: Perform gross photography as per SOP
- Quality manager: Review and approve photographs for quality assurance
- Laboratory supervisor: Ensure compliance with the SOP

- Computer with image editing software
Procedure
- Prepare the grossing area by ensuring it is clean and well-lit.
- Set up the camera on the tripod at the appropriate height and angle.
- Position the specimen on the background material for optimal visibility.
- Adjust lighting to minimize shadows and enhance detail.
- Take initial photographs from multiple angles of the specimen.
- Use the measuring scale in the photograph for size reference.
- Review the images for clarity and quality, retake if necessary.
Records
- Photograph log maintained for each specimen
- Quality control checklist for gross photographs
Safety
- Ensure all electrical equipment is in good condition to prevent hazards.
- Use personal protective equipment as required during grossing.
