Purpose
To handle formaldehyde safely and limit exposure.

All formalin use and storage.
Responsibilities
- All staff handling formalin
- Safety officer: monitoring
Materials & equipment
- 10% NBF
- Fume hood/ventilation, PPE, spill kit
Procedure
- Handle and decant formalin only in a fume hood or ventilated area.
- Wear nitrile gloves, lab coat and eye protection.
- Store in labelled, sealed, compatible containers away from heat.
- Use the spill kit for spills; ventilate and neutralise as per kit instructions.
- Dispose of formalin waste per biomedical waste rules — never down the drain.

- Exposure monitoring (if applicable)
- Waste disposal records
Safety
- Formaldehyde is a sensitiser and carcinogen — minimise exposure; follow local exposure limits.
