Purpose
To ensure proper fixation of cytology specimens for optimal preservation and accurate analysis.
Scope
This SOP applies to all cytology specimens processed in the laboratory.
Responsibilities
- Cytotechnologist: Perform specimen fixation
- Laboratory Manager: Ensure compliance with SOP
- Quality Manager: Review and update SOP as needed
Materials & equipment
- Fixative solution
- Cytology slides
- Labeling materials
- Personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Disposable gloves
- Waste disposal containers
Procedure
- Gather all necessary materials before starting the fixation process.
- Label each specimen container clearly with patient information.
- Submerge the specimen in the fixative solution immediately upon collection.
- Ensure that the specimen is fully covered by the fixative solution.
- Allow the specimen to fix for the recommended time as per fixative guidelines.
- Transfer the fixed specimen to labeled slides for further processing.

- Fixation log indicating date and time of fixation
- Specimen tracking log
Safety
- Always wear appropriate PPE when handling fixatives.
- Ensure proper ventilation in the fixation area.
