Critical / Panic Value Communication SOP
Purpose
To ensure timely communication of critical/panic values to appropriate personnel for immediate action.
Scope
This SOP applies to all laboratory staff involved in specimen handling and reporting.
Responsibilities
- Laboratory staff: Identify and communicate critical values promptly.
- Quality manager: Ensure compliance with SOP and training of staff.
- Pathologists: Validate critical values and provide clinical interpretation.

- Contact information for on-call personnel
Procedure
- 1. Identify specimens that may yield critical/panic values.
- 2. Perform testing as per standard operating procedures.
- 3. Review results for critical/panic values immediately upon completion.
- 4. If a critical value is identified, notify the responsible pathologist without delay.
- 5. Document the notification in the communication log.
- 6. Ensure the pathologist confirms receipt of the critical value communication.
- 7. Follow up to ensure appropriate clinical action is taken based on the critical value.
- 8. Maintain confidentiality during the communication process.
