Chemical Spill Response SOP
Purpose
To outline the procedures for responding to chemical spills to ensure safety and minimize hazards.
Scope
This SOP applies to all personnel working in the laboratory.
Responsibilities
- Laboratory personnel: report spills immediately
- Safety officer: oversee spill response
- Hazardous materials coordinator: ensure proper disposal

Procedure
- Assess the situation and ensure personal safety before responding.
- Alert others in the vicinity of the spill.
- Evacuate the area if necessary, following emergency protocols.
- Put on appropriate PPE before approaching the spill.
- Contain the spill using absorbent materials or barriers.
- Neutralize the chemical if applicable and safe to do so.
- Clean up the spill according to the material safety data sheet (MSDS) instructions.
- Dispose of waste materials in designated containers.
- Decontaminate the area after cleanup is complete.
- Report the incident to the safety officer and document the spill.
- Review the response and update procedures if necessary.

Safety
