Biomedical Waste Segregation & Disposal SOP

Purpose

To establish guidelines for the proper segregation and disposal of biomedical waste to ensure safety and compliance with regulations.

Scope

This SOP applies to all personnel involved in the handling of biomedical waste within the laboratory.

Responsibilities

• Laboratory staff: Ensure proper segregation of waste at the point of generation.
• Waste management personnel: Oversee the disposal process and maintain records.

Materials & equipment

• Color-coded waste bins
• Personal protective equipment (PPE)
• Labels for waste containers
• Biohazard bags
• Sharps containers
• Disposal contracts with licensed waste disposal companies

Procedure

1. Identify and classify waste types at the point of generation.
2. Use color-coded bins for different waste categories: red for biohazard, yellow for infectious, etc.
3. Ensure all waste is placed in appropriate containers immediately after use.
4. Seal biohazard bags securely before disposal.
5. Dispose of sharps in designated sharps containers only.
6. Conduct regular inspections of waste storage areas to ensure compliance.
7. Train all staff on waste segregation protocols annually.

Safety
