Tissue embedded in the wrong orientation
Tissue sections may appear distorted or cropped, affecting the visibility of key structures. The orientation may be inconsistent with expected anatomical landmarks.
Where it usually appears: Typically observed during routine embedding or when reviewing blocks prior to sectioning.
- Improper handling of tissue during processing
- Inadequate orientation during embedding
- Failure to follow embedding protocol
- Verify the orientation of the tissue in the embedding mold
- Check for any visible marks or indicators on the tissue
- Re-embed the tissue in the correct orientation
- Consult with a colleague for a second opinion on orientation
- Ensure proper training for all personnel on embedding techniques
- Use orientation markers on the tissue prior to embedding
