Section thickness not reproducible between staff
Sections appear uneven in thickness, leading to inconsistent staining and diagnostic quality.
Where it usually appears: Typically observed during routine microtomy when multiple staff members are cutting sections.
- Differences in cutting technique among staff
- Variability in microtome settings
- Inconsistent paraffin block quality
- Improper blade angle or dull blades
- Environmental factors like temperature and humidity
- Verify microtome settings are consistent
- Check blade sharpness and condition
- Inspect paraffin blocks for uniformity
- Standardize training for all staff on microtomy techniques
- Implement a checklist for microtome setup before use
- Rotate staff through a single microtome to ensure consistency
- Regularly calibrate and maintain microtome equipment
- Conduct periodic training refreshers for staff
- Establish a quality control program for section thickness
