Ribbon curls upward off the blade
Also known as: curling, upward ribbon
The tissue ribbon appears curled upwards off the blade, making it difficult to obtain uniform sections.
Where it usually appears: Typically observed during microtomy when cutting paraffin-embedded tissue blocks.
- Blade angle is incorrect
- Tissue block temperature is too warm
- Blade is dull or damaged
- Inadequate trimming of the block
- Excessive pressure during cutting
- Check the blade angle and adjust if necessary
- Ensure the block is at the correct temperature before cutting
- Replace or sharpen the blade
- Trim the block more adequately before sectioning
- Adjust the cutting speed and pressure
- Regularly check and maintain blades
- Ensure proper embedding and cooling of tissue blocks
- Train staff on proper microtomy techniques
