Poor fixation of cytology smears
Cytology smears appear watery or have a washed-out appearance. Cellular details may be obscured or lost.
Where it usually appears: Typically seen in smears prepared from fresh specimens or during transport.
- Delayed fixation after specimen collection
- Inadequate volume of fixative used
- Improper technique during smear preparation
- Use of fixative that is not suitable for the specimen type
- Check the time elapsed since specimen collection
- Inspect the fixative volume used
- Review the smear preparation technique
- Re-fix the smears in appropriate fixative
- Prepare new smears using proper technique and adequate fixative
- Ensure immediate fixation after collection
- Train staff on proper fixation protocols
- Implement a timer for fixation time
- Regularly check fixative quality and suitability
