Overheated wax hardens or scorches tissue
Also known as: scorched tissue, hard wax
Tissue may appear burnt or discolored. Wax may be overly hard and brittle.
Where it usually appears: Typically seen during paraffin embedding if the wax temperature exceeds recommended levels.
- Wax temperature too high
- Insufficient cooling time for tissue
- Inappropriate wax type
- Check wax temperature setting
- Inspect tissue for discoloration
- Evaluate cooling time
- Lower wax temperature
- Re-embed tissue in fresh wax
- Adjust embedding protocols
- Regularly calibrate temperature settings
- Use a thermometer to monitor wax temperature
- Follow SOP for embedding times
