Mucicarmine non-specific staining

What it looks like

Mucicarmine staining shows red to pink cytoplasmic granules in tissue sections.

Where it usually appears: Typically appears in sections of mucin-producing tumors or tissues.

Likely causes
  • Overstaining due to prolonged exposure to the stain
  • Contamination with other chromogens or stains
  • Inadequate washing steps after staining

  • Verify staining time against protocol
  • Check for any visible contamination on slides

  • Shorten staining time to recommended duration
