IHC edge (rim) artifact
Also known as: rim artifact, edge effect
Thin, dark line or halo around the tissue section on the slide.
Where it usually appears: Typically observed at the edges of the tissue sections, especially in poorly fixed specimens.
- Inadequate fixation
- Overheating during processing
- Improper embedding technique
- Inconsistent sectioning thickness
- Contamination during staining
- Inspect fixation time and quality
- Check for overheating during processing
- Re-fix the tissue specimen
- Adjust processing temperatures
- Re-embed and section the tissue properly
- Ensure optimal fixation protocols are followed
- Maintain consistent processing temperatures
- Train staff on proper embedding techniques
