Formalin fumes exceeding exposure limits
Also known as: formaldehyde fumes, formalin vapors
Formalin fumes are colorless and have a strong, pungent odor. They may be visible as a mist in poorly ventilated areas.
Where it usually appears: Commonly observed in histopathology labs during tissue fixation processes.
- Inadequate ventilation in the laboratory
- Improper storage of formalin
- Excessive use of formalin during procedures
- Assess ventilation systems
- Check for leaks in formalin containers
- Monitor formalin usage
- Increase ventilation by opening windows or using exhaust fans
- Seal any leaks in formalin containers
- Reduce the amount of formalin used
- Implement regular maintenance checks on ventilation systems
- Use formalin in a fume hood
- Train staff on proper handling and storage of formalin
