Expired reagents affecting staining
Also known as: staining issues, poor staining
Staining may appear weak, uneven, or absent in specific areas of the slide. Tissue morphology may be obscured due to inadequate staining.
Where it usually appears: Usually observed during routine histological staining processes such as hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining.
- Use of expired reagents
- Improper storage conditions
- Inadequate reagent preparation
- Check expiration dates on reagents
- Inspect storage conditions for temperature and light exposure
- Review reagent preparation protocols
- Replace expired reagents with fresh ones
- Re-run staining with new reagents
- Consult with a supervisor if issues persist
- Implement regular inventory checks for reagents
- Establish a first-in, first-out (FIFO) system
- Train staff on proper reagent storage and handling
