Tissue may appear overly dehydrated or shrunken. Histological features may be obscured or altered due to prolonged fixation or dehydration.
Where it usually appears: Typically observed when specimens are not processed promptly after collection, particularly in high-volume laboratories.
- Specimens held beyond recommended fixation times
- Inadequate staffing or scheduling
- Equipment malfunctions
- Poor communication regarding specimen handling
- Verify time since specimen collection
- Inspect equipment for functionality
- Confirm proper storage conditions
- Process specimens as soon as possible
- Rehydrate specimens if necessary
- Re-evaluate fixation times
- Establish a processing timeline
