Cryostat frosting / icing up
Also known as: frost buildup, ice formation
Frost or ice crystals may be visible on the cryostat chamber or on the specimen block, affecting the quality of the sections.
Where it usually appears: Typically observed during prolonged use of the cryostat or in environments with high humidity.
- High ambient humidity
- Inadequate temperature settings
- Frequent door openings
- Improper maintenance of the cryostat
- Insufficient airflow around the cryostat
- Check the temperature settings on the cryostat
- Inspect the door seal for damage
- Evaluate the room humidity levels
- Reduce humidity levels in the laboratory
- Adjust the cryostat temperature settings
- Limit door openings during operation
- Regular maintenance and servicing of the cryostat
- Monitor humidity and temperature in the laboratory
- Train staff on proper usage protocols
