Block separates from the cassette base
The tissue block is detached from the cassette base, leading to potential loss of sample integrity. This may appear as a loose block or tissue floating away from the base during sectioning.
Where it usually appears: Often seen during embedding or when retrieving blocks from storage.
- Insufficient embedding medium used
- Inadequate cooling time before processing
- Improper cassette alignment during embedding
- Old or degraded embedding medium
- Inspect the embedding medium for consistency
- Check the cassette for any visible defects
- Assess the cooling temperature and time used
- Re-embed the tissue block ensuring proper alignment
- Use fresh embedding medium
- Allow adequate cooling time before processing
- Regularly check and replace embedding medium
- Ensure proper procedural training for staff
- Maintain equipment to ensure optimal performance
