Block advances unevenly (feed/advance drift)
Also known as: feed drift, uneven block advance
Tissue sections may appear thicker on one side and thinner on the other, resulting in uneven cut quality.
Where it usually appears: Commonly observed during routine microtomy when cutting large or dense blocks.
- Block is not properly oriented
- Blade dull or damaged
- Inconsistent pressure applied during cutting
- Microtome settings not calibrated
- Block temperature too low
- Inspect block orientation
- Examine blade for damage or wear
- Check microtome settings for accuracy
- Reorient the block properly
- Replace or sharpen the blade
- Adjust cutting pressure during sectioning
- Regularly calibrate microtome
- Ensure proper block embedding technique
- Perform routine maintenance on blades
