FNA Sample Handling SOP
Purpose
To outline the proper handling and processing of Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) samples in cytology to ensure sample integrity and accurate results.
Scope
This SOP applies to all personnel involved in the handling of FNA samples in the laboratory.
Responsibilities
- Cytotechnologist: Perform initial sample assessment and processing
- Laboratory Technician: Prepare slides and maintain records
- Quality Manager: Ensure compliance with SOP and training of staff
Materials & equipment
- Fine needle aspiration kit
- Microscope slides
- Fixative solution
- Labeling materials
- PPE (gloves, lab coat, mask)
- Sharps container
Procedure
- Verify patient identification and sample requisition forms before starting the procedure.
- Assemble all necessary materials and ensure a clean work area.
- Obtain FNA sample using appropriate technique and equipment.
- Immediately place the aspirated material onto a microscope slide.
- Spread the sample evenly on the slide using another slide or a suitable tool.
- Fix the sample using an appropriate fixative as per protocol.
- Label the slide with patient information and sample details.
- Store the fixed slides in a designated area until further processing.
- Record the details of the FNA procedure in the laboratory information system.
- Dispose of any sharps and waste according to safety protocols.
- Clean the work area and perform hand hygiene after the procedure.
